Applying to the TLC

The TLC employs about 60 peer tutors every semester.  We encourage applications year-round, but we do most of our hiring in January and August. If there are no positions available at the time you apply, we will contact you if an opportunity becomes available.

TLC Peer Tutor Employment Process

The student employment process is as follows:

1. Interest Form

   , Computer Science, , , or

2. Interview Selection
   

   After reviewing the interest forms, Coordinators contacted selected students to interview.  If selected for an interview, candidates must complete an application and return it to the coordinator.  All tutors must have a minimum of two recommendations and a cumulative g.p.a. of 3.0 or higher.

3. Interview

   We will begin your interview by describing briefly the kind of work you will be doing and what we see as the most challenging and rewarding aspects of that work. Next, we will ask you to answer several questions to evaluate how well you fit the available position. Then, we will answer your questions about the job.

4. Notification

   Within five business days (usually sooner), the coordinator will review your application and interview results and notify you regarding our decision, along with information about your employment start date. Coordinators will send out recommendation requests to the faculty you listed. Two faculty recommendations are required. Whether or not we offer a position, you will receive notification.

5. New Student Orientation

   Once you accept a job with the TLC, you will receive a checklist with details about the student employment clearance process.  This will include completing the 鈥淣ew Student Employee Orientation鈥� available to you through Blackboard, You will be added to the orientation module allowing you access to a detailed PowerPoint and follow up assessment. You will need to achieve an 80% or higher for it to be considered complete.
   

6. Human Resource and Payroll Paperwork

   You will be contacted by the TLC Payroll Coordinator to complete I-9 paperwork with original documentation and paperwork through Payroll for direct deposit and W-4.

   Once you are fully processed, you will submit and approve timesheets every 2 weeks. Visit the Payroll Office page for more information.

7. Training

   Your coordinator will work with you to set up your employment start date, which includes a meeting to orient you to the work environment. You will complete either online or in-person training through our certified training program.  The training and recommendations are required before beginning to tutor. We follow the College Reading and Learning Association鈥檚 Guidelines through our certificated training program. All tutors are required to complete level one certification training by the end of one year of tutoring.
