Get Hands-on Experience

Towson’s Media Center gives you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in creating your own productions. Take advantage of our Media Labs which provide equipment and studios for video, audio, and multimedia production. The Media Labs offer an extensive inventory of cameras, lights, microphones, accessories and more that FAMA Majors can borrow. 

You will get first-hand experience through the department-operated HD television studio, HD cinema auditorium, audio recording and foley studios, editing/post-production suites, and radio production rooms.

FAMA Major for a Day

The FAMA Department invites you to FAMA Major for a Day, a day-long event that includes not only a facilities tour, but also mini-classes with FAMA faculty and Q&A with faculty and staff. FAMA Major for a Day takes place annually in October. The date for Fall 2026 will be announced soon. .

Tour FAMA

If you can't make the Major for a Day event, FAMA also hosts department visits with tours of the facilities each semester. Admitted students can tour FAMA by signing up for one of the Admitted Student Days events in the Spring.

On these date admitted students can meet with a department representative to have their questions answered and tour the facilities available to students in our major. Visit the Department Tours page for maps, times, and information.

New Facilities

Towson University is renovating Smith Hall's west wing and reconstructing the east wing to create a modern, 200,000 gross square foot learning facility.

Once complete, it will house 91Ó°ÊÓÆƽâ°æ’s Film, Audio, Media Arts Department, as well as the Departments of Mass Communication and Communication Studies, bringing College of Fine Arts and Communication programs together to expand interdisciplinary opportunities for students. 

FAMA Facilities will include:

• production sound stage
• television studio
• black box production studio
• two audio recording studios and a foley recording studio
• individual editing suites for audio and video post-production and color correction
• a mixing stage/screening theater
• animation studio
• four computer labs dedicated to video and audio post-production, virtual reality production
• fully-outfitted equipment lending office
• classrooms with 4K screening capabilities
• 4K Dolby Atmos cinema theater

A centerpiece of the building is The Mike Flanagan '02 Cinema, designed with the technology and luxury of a top-tier cinema, will provide a real-world learning experience for students and faculty to showcase their works in a major motion picture setting.

The Flanagan Cinema will be equipped with Dolby Atmos-Certified Immersive Audio—one of just six Atmos-certified theaters in the Baltimore region—a cinema-ready 4K projector with digital cinema package support, enabling students to gain hands-on experience with industry-grade film technology.

Flanagan has a long history of supporting Towson University through visiting classes as a guest artist, arranging advance screenings of his work, providing opportunities for students to travel to film sets, and serving as commencement speaker. The 2002 grad’s generous gift to name the Michael Flanagan '02 Cinema and fund the Mike Flanagan Endowment for Electronic Media and Film will enhance the College of Fine Arts and Communication's support of the next generation of filmmakers and media professionals. The Mike Flanagan Cinema is set to open with the completion of the new Smith Hall in 2027.
