Exhibition | Phaan Howng: A Bag of Rocks for A Bag of Rice
Exquisitely disposed rocks and trees and vegetation. The promise of an inspired space of meditation and detachment. Such has been of the Westernized image of the Chinese and Japanese garden. Yet, such enchanted “natural” spaces camouflage the histories of empire, wealth, privilege, exploitation, ecological extraction, and displacement behind their creation. Phaan Howng’s site-specific installation engages East Asian gardens as a case study of the dynamics embedded within these private spaces.

API Mythology and Folklore in "Tornkid"
In Spring 2019, the Baltimore Asian Pasifika Arts Collective (BAPAC), in partnership with Cohesion Theatre Company, produced Tornkid, an original play by NY-based playwright Katelynn Kenney. Tornkid draws on the power of Asian and Pacific mythology and folklore to explore identity and unearth how ancient female narratives can provide guidance towards healing our broken world. The AA&CC created these informational posters to give some background on the mythology and folklore that helped inspire Tornkid.
Dress to Express Museum Module: Exploring Portraits, Dress, and Identity in Asian Art
What can art objects from distant times and places express about the identity of the people and the cultures depicted in them? Local Learning invited the AA&CC to create this online learning module in conjunction with the first volume of the Journal of Folklore and Education to expand on the theme "Dress to Express: Exploring Culture and Identity."
Audio Tour: Perseverance: Japanese Tattoo Tradition in a Modern World
In spring 2015, the AA&CC presented the Japanese American National Museum's traveling exhibition of photographs by Kip Fulbeck and curated by master tattoo artist and author Takahiro Kitamura that explored the master craftsmanship and ongoing influence of traditional Japanese tattooing. With a unique display designed by Fulbeck to reference the craft’s roots in ukiyo-e and other Japanese art forms, the exhibition showcased both the splendor and the intricacy of modern tattooing.
